Blood pressure reading
How to take a blood pressure reading
If you have had a problem with high blood pressure or
low blood pressure, your
doctor may request that you regularly take a blood
pressure reading at home to keep track of where it is at. This
is also a good idea for anyone that just wants to stay aware of
how their blood pressure is doing.
It’s important that you take your blood pressure
reading correctly, however. Doing it wrong or reading it
wrong can result in an inaccurate blood pressure reading which
will be misleading. It’s also smart to get a
blood pressure reading from a professional on a
fairly regular basis.
So how do you take a blood pressure reading? When using a
digital blood pressure
monitor, be sure to follow the directions on the monitor.
Sit up or lie down and have your arm at an even level with your
heart. Put the cuff on about an inch above the elbow. Be sure
it is snug but not cutting off the circulation.
Be sure it’s not too loose though or your blood
pressure reading won't be correct. Turn the monitor on and
follow the directions for your monitor. Be sure you write down
the time, the reading and the date as well as which arm was
used to get the reading. If you have a manual blood pressure
cuff, the procedure is the same but you will have to follow the
directions for your specific device. These work better when you
have someone else take your blood pressure reading for
you.
