The blood pressure monitor
Is a home blood pressure monitor right for
you?
Many people wonder if they need to have their own blood
pressure monitor at home. There are other ways of getting your
blood pressure checked if you need to
but if you must check it on a daily basis, it may be easier to
have your own at home. However, not everyone needs to have
regular blood pressure monitoring at home. If you do, your
doctor will tell you. Here are some cases when you may need to
have a home blood pressure monitor:
• If you have very elevated or high blood
pressure • If you might have hormone producing
tumors
• If you have whitecoat hypertension
In these cases as well as the case of anyone that just wants
to feel informed about their blood pressure, it is ok
to get a blood
pressure reading using a home blood pressure monitor. The
important thing to understand is that these results are not
always 100% accurate and should be verified by your
physician.
You need to use a blood pressure monitor that is
FDA approved, automatic, researched and subjected to clinical
trials and correctly calibrated. This is not generally
available to the ordinary public. However, occasional home
monitoring is still possible with over the counter type devices
as long as you have it verified from a professional on a
regular basis as well.
If you have one of the conditions or situations listed above
and your doctor feels you need regular home monitoring, they
will see to it that you get the proper equipment and training
to operate it and monitor your own blood pressure. This is
typically covered by most insurance agencies.
