Blood pressure medication

All blood pressure medication is not the same

What are some common types of blood pressure medication? There are actually eight different types of medicines that can be used to treat abnormal blood pressure. With each of these types of blood pressure medication, there are many different specific types that are used for this as well as other types of treatment.

One of the most common types of blood pressure medication is the diuretic. These are often used to treat high blood pressure by getting rid of extra sodium and water in the body. They are often referred to as “water pills” but they can be dangerous if you take them and don’t actually need to. Some examples of this kind of blood pressure medication include chlorthalidone/Thalitone, furosemide/Lasix, hydrochlorothiazide/Esidrix and indapamide/Lozol.

ACE inhibitors (Angiotensin-covertering enzyme inhibitors) are another type of blood pressure medication. These are often used because they keep the body from producing what is called angiotensin II (a hormone). Examples of these medications are benazepril/Lotensin, enalapril/Vasotec, lisinopril/Prinivil or Zestril, quinapril/Accupril, ramipril/Altace and trandolapril/Mavik.

Beta blockers are also commonly used because they help the heart beat slower. Some of these include propanolol/Inderal, atenolol/Tenormin, carvedilol/Coreg and metoproplol/Lopressor. Beta blockers are prescribed for different reasons and your doctor should always monitor your blood pressure while on them if you are taking them for reasons other than blood pressure.

Other types of blood pressure medication fall under the categories of ARBs (Angiotensin II receptor blockers), CCBs (calcium channel blockers), alpha blockers, direct vasodilators and centrally acting drugs which affect the bran and central nervous system.

No blood pressure medication should be taken unless prescribed by a doctor. Never take another person’s prescription because you think it will help your blood pressure, too. Remember that every individual is different. Only your doctor can tell if medications and which one is right for you.
