It appears they can according to a study in Australia. They may also help control diabetes.
Researchers in Melbourne have found some evidence that certain blood pressure medications speed up metabolism, which burns fat.
Don’t get too excited yet though, couch potatoes. The researchers say you’ll still need to get some exercise.
The discovery was actually coincidental. The research team was studying the effects of blood pressure medication on mice but was not looking for any correlation to weight loss.
By the end of the study, they had accidentally found one.

I don’t know about you, but every time I go to the doctor for anything, someone checks my blood pressure. That’s good.
Apparently some doctors aren’t doing routine blood pressure checks like my guy is.
A new study finds that routine blood pressure screenings in doctor’s offices are being done on only about 56 percent of patients.
The study also found that a low percentage of high blood pressure patients actually meeting their blood pressure goals after they found out they have hypertension.
The study was done by the Stanford University School of Medicine study, published in the May issue of Hypertension,only 56 percent of all patient visits, and in 93 percent of visits by patients diagnosed with hypertension.

We’ve heard a lot of bad things about blood pressure medications and their side effects. Now, we may have finally gotten some good news.
Australian researchers say they’ve found some evidence blood pressure drugs may help fight obesity
The research shows some indication blood pressure medications can help burn fat by increasing metabolic rate.
Scientists found that mice whose system regulating blood pressure was genetically blocked had 50 to 60 per cent less body fat than normal mice.
The mice were thinner around the stomach in particular, and did not get fatter as they aged.
